Unbecoming human

Rebeca Scurtu

She woke up from a dream
unbound from gravity

Unsure if she was awake
in the garden of her mind,
she could hear the rhythmic pulse of a tree-heart,
boom-boom
boom-boom
boom-boom

And her lips of arterial red remembered
whispering children stories to the branches
and screaming herself without being heard,

the roots broke through the spine:
she could then see the fibrous wood of her bifurcated self

inside

her body
– fragile and vulnerable –
a galactic bruise of deep emotions,
was holding her identity
and carried her ancestors´ heartaches.
She was their fire-breathing chimera.
Her fingers,
like tectonic plates
were now holding her together,
in a cradle-land

and then all her sadness bloomed into blue lilies,
her spine curved into a constellation

a second soul she´s carrying
behind her eyelids.
