about bipolar poetry
We publish poetry written by people who have been diagnosed with bipolar affective disorder (also known as bipolar disorder or manic-depression).
We provide a space where people with bipolar disorder can share their stories, struggles and insights through poetry – and to help readers gain a deeper understanding of bipolar by hearing directly from those who live with it.
"I am a psychiatrist practising in Sydney, Australia. A few of my bipolar patients have shown me their poetry over the years and some of it has been very impressive. These days, the chances of any individual developing a bipolar disorder at some stage in their lives is 1.6%. There is a close association between bipolar disorder and creativity."

What we publish
All poems on this site are submitted by people with a bipolar diagnosis. Some dive into the depths of depression or the rush of mania. Others take detours – into memory, love, anger, stillness, survival. Whatever the subject, the shared aim is honesty and connection.
We publish work in four categories:
We welcome diverse voices, styles, and emotional tones – from sharp despair to wild delight, quiet moments to bold declarations. Each poem is a step toward destigmatising mental illness and celebrating creativity in all its forms.
