The Show Won’t Go On

Kennedy Fairbanks

note: this poem is about the relief of planning to die

Paint my face

Shed my clothes

Put on my whole

Show wardrobe

Practice the script

One last time

Cast, tonight is our last show –

For life?

Practice smiles

In the mirror

Just as I

Pin up my hair

Stretch my neck –

For the hanging later

Belt a scream

To warm the voice

For once performing, is a choice

Inhale, stop –

Do not breathe

Places people

Ten to start

I take my place –

For the end

Smile wide

Its your last shot –

And we’re on

Lights dim

Spotlight’s on

The show begins

Ladies and gents

Tonight we present –

Look, they’re happy?
