Sand

Avril Essler

My mind has become a desert where nothing grows
except fear and retribution,
and tears of salt fall upon parched dunes
swept by winds into meaningless forms.
Visions of secret pacts which I cannot recall,
and threats of punishments to be borne
for revealing My Self
and that which has brought me to the limits of reality.
Why am I worthy only of my own extinction,
a malignant cell in the body of the universe,
how far is the journey to appeasement
and when may I stop running?
