First Shift

James Ellner

The delicious apple
I took a bite
Juice ran down my face
Wiped it on my handkerchief
You owned the orchard
I helped harvest the crop
I”m too old now
and I”ve lost my only shade
Just a floppy hat
I”ve grown too old to climb the ladder
It”s even hard to take a pee
Remember when you were young with me
Before my mind caved in
How”d you stay so young?
And in a hollow one night my hair turned white
Was a ghost of me
Just returning the moonlight Rocky Mountain night
I”m back in my cell of juvenile delinquency
