a naive homily concerning romantic love

Kate McInnes

I Love You… subject, verb, object
I Love You…These words should be kept
under lock and key.
Behind shatter-proof glass.
Only to be held
with the same care,
afforded 1000 year old vellum manuscripts
I Love You…Stripped bare in the world,
a commodity easily bought or bartered,
traded quickly.
A pamphlet,
generic junkmail, viral, spam-like.
Hackneyed and empty
I Love You…Must be kept for heartfelt whispers,
hushed ardent tones.
Breathed with frightened, fragile need.
