Title: The Trees
Author: Pegasus22
Date Submitted: 5/2/2006

Poem: The trees came down
and when
you stood
in the backyard
the space
above
the roofline
was new
the smell
of the washing
on the clothesline
was fresh
like we had just moved in.
But our house
looked fallen
in the absence
of the trees.
Trees that had never fallen
on our house
in eighty years of growth.
The jacaranda
reigned triumphant
tall and untouched.
The birds flew
on into the distance
through the space
where the trees’
branches had lifted
the sky....
